Tap & Tank
When is the water off, how full are the dams, and what will fuel cost next month? Alerts for South Africa, starting in the Western Cape. In development…
What it does
Tap & Tank (working name) answers three questions for people in South Africa:
- When is the water off in my area, and when does it come back?
- How full are the dams that supply me, and how long will they last?
- What will petrol and diesel cost next month?
It starts in the Western Cape, with more than a thousand areas: every official City of Cape Town suburb and ward, plus the towns of the province's other municipalities.
Features
- Dams to my tap. Your area is linked to the dams and supply system that serve it, with level, trend, last year and a clearly labelled estimate of days of storage at current use.
- Restrictions in plain words. The current level per municipality, what it means for gardens, pools and tariffs, and when it changed.
- Official outage feed with timelines. Planned and unplanned outages from municipal sources, with their status as it changes.
- Fuel in the same app. The official monthly price for your zone, plus a next-month direction estimate, always labelled as an estimate.
- Alerts where you want them. Push notifications, and Telegram for people who would rather not install another app.
How it is built
A data pipeline collects public sources politely, keeps a raw copy of everything it fetches, parses it into a warehouse and serves it through an API and an installable web app. Native iOS and Android apps follow. Every figure is shown with its source and date.
Status
In development, under a working name. Not in the app stores yet.
